Rainbow over Landmannalaugar, Iceland, July 2011

On my first evening in Iceland (well, second if you count in a night in Reykjavik) I was treated with some spectacular weather conditions. Dense storm clouds, rainbow and gorgeous light. All at the same time and in Landmannalaugar, a landscape that is almost surreal. Early in the afternoon I decided to head out for a short scouting walk to get a grip of the surroundings as this was my first time here. I came back just before midnight. Tired, hungry and thirsty, but with a big smile on my face. I was overwhelmed with what I had seen. The landscape itself is stunning and in these conditions it was almost to much.

This image is my favorite from the evening. I enjoy the complex shapes of the rhyolite ridges and the way the light interacts with them. The rainbow, of course, was a bonus.

Beach Study, Lofoten, March 2011

The last posts here on the blog has been images of grand views so I thought it’s about time to slow things down a bit with something more intimate and abstract. This is a beach study from my recent trip to Lofoten. It’s fascinating how these detail studies of the landscape can give you so much. Or as Eliot Porter put it:

“Sometimes you can tell a large story with a tiny subject.”
- Eliot Porter

I was out on the beach searching for interesting patterns as I became aware of the reflections of some colorful clouds in the sky. Instead of searching for dry areas I looked for areas with water running through, reflecting the sky. The reflections only showed in certain angles so it took a while to find a good spot to place the tripod.

I find this image complex both in terms of lines and colors. What otherwise is a nearly monochrome subject is here transformed into a colorful display of line and shape, light and shadow.

Aurora Borealis #2, Abisko National Park, February 2011

I have just been starting to go through all the images from my recent trip. This image was shot on the same night as the one I posted here before. A night that I will remember for a long time, the aurora is such a wonderful thing to witness. And this night was just something special. When activity is high one can describe it as a dance of light as it moves across the sky.

One can merely try to capture the beauty of the aurora in a photograph. Its essence lies in the movement, in the dance. And that one can only witness in person.

Campsite, Njunni lakes, Lapland, July 2010

As much as I appreciate the convenience of a daily life in the suburb of a large city, it just can’t compete with the feeling of being out hiking in the wilderness. Carrying a tent makes for the ultimate freedom to choose where to spend the night. Staying a few days at a beautiful spot or experiencing a new horizon on every sunrise, it’s just up to you. For me, it’s like a second home.

I want to share this image with you as I think it captures the feeling of being in the wilderness. A small tent in a vast landscape, just the way it should be!

Mountain Lake, Govggejávri, Lapland – July 2010

As I wander around in the mountains it often strikes me how vibrant I feel. How everything before me and everything within me seems alive. In daily life my mind is so often cluttered with thoughts. Here, however, my mind is as clear as the water in a mountain lake.

The image is from the latest trip and is one of my favourites.
